Rayleigh Scattering: The Earth’s atmosphere is composed of various gases, with nitrogen and oxygen being the most abundant. These gas molecules are much smaller in size compared to the wavelengths of visible light. When sunlight enters the atmosphere, these small gas molecules scatter the sunlight in all directions. However, shorter wavelengths (blue and violet light) are scattered much more than longer wavelengths (red light).

Blue Light Scattering: Because of Rayleigh scattering, blue light is scattered in all directions by the molecules in the atmosphere. This scattering is more effective for shorter wavelengths, and as a result, the sky appears blue to our eyes when we look in various directions during the daytime.

Path Length: When we look directly overhead, the path of sunlight through the atmosphere is relatively short, and most of the blue and violet light is scattered away, leaving a blue sky. When we look near the horizon, the path of sunlight through the atmosphere is longer. More of the blue and violet light is scattered, making the sky appear lighter and closer to white or pale blue.

Sunset and Sunrise Colors: During sunrise and sunset, the sunlight passes through a larger portion of the atmosphere due to the low angle at which it enters. This longer path results in even more scattering of shorter wavelengths, causing the blue and violet light to be scattered away and leaving longer wavelengths like red and orange to dominate the sky, leading to the warm colors observed during these times.
